Detection of Normal Serum Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Values according to Age in Healthy Korea Men without Prosta tic Diseases

Abstract

|
Nevertheless, the lack of sensitivity and specificity in the detection of prostate cancer, the serum prostate specific antigen(PSA) is one of the commonly used diagnostic modality for prostate cancer. But using PSA cutoff value greater than 4.0 ng/ml and the normal age specific reference ranges established by Oesterling and associates(age 40 to 49 years: 0 to 2.5 ng/ml, age 50 to 59 : 0 to 3.5 ng/ml, age 60 to 69 : 0 to 4.5 ng/ml, age 70 to 79 : 0 to 6.5 ng/ml) is not certain whether it is preferable to Korean men. We measured the serum PSA in order to know the normal age specific reference ranges and the cutoff value of PSA in 6,606 healthy Korean men. From August, 2000 to May, 2001, serum PSA according to age were tested by Enzyme Immunoassay using CanAg(Sweden) PSA kit in 6,606 healthy men between <30 and 79 years of age who had normal results. Non history of prostate disease. Mean PSA values and Newly derived upper limits of PSA according to age(n=6,606). The mean PSA values according to age were 0.598±0.521 nglml in the 30↓ year group(n=59), 0.854±0.5981 ng/ml in the 30-39 year group(n=I ,289), 0.957±0.8441 ng/ml in the 40-49 year group(n=2,841), 0.878±0.578 ng/ml in the 50-59 year group(n=859), 1.402±0.987 ng/ml in the 60-69 year group(n=1,534) in the 70 to 79 year group. The upper limits of PSA (mean+2SD) according to age were 1.64 nglml in the 30↓ year group, 2.01 ng/ml in the 30-39 year group, 2.65nglml in the 40-49 year group, 2.03ng/ml in the 50-59 year group, 3.38 nglml in the 60-69 year group and 3.94ng/ml in the 70 to 79 year group. These results showed that mean PSA and upper limits of PSA increased significantly after 60 years of age(P values<0.01).
